Middle block powers sweep over Runnin' Lopes

Middle block powers Lady Indian sweep of Runnin' Lopes

The McCook Community College volleyball team picked up a straight-set win Friday night in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center over Lamar 25-12, 25-14, 25-20.

"We really worked on blocking a lot this week and after the North Platte game I felt like that really showed up tonight for sure especially out of Kallie Cathcart and Mackenzie Anderson," MCC Coach Hayley Kobza said.

Both are freshmen. Mackenzie Anderson from Ogallala and Kallie Cathcart is from Holly, Colo. Cathcart had six kills and six block assists and one solo block on the night.

"Kallie played really good tonight, she's a very talented little player, 'little' but she plays really big," Kobza said of the 5-7 outside hitter.

Freshman Fernanda Canedo, (Cochabamba, Boliva) led MCC with nine kills. Sophomore Mallory Brown (Colorado Springs) had eight kills and two ace serves.

"This was a good start for the weekend but tomorrow we have to turn around and play a completely different ball game," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

"Northeastern Junior College is competitive and tough, we have to not make small mistakes like we did tonight -- especially in the third set. That was not our game plan."

Lamar falls to 3-14. The Lady Indians improve to 15-7 and 2-1 in Region IX South play and will face Northeastern Junior College Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

The Plainswomen were 13-5 and ranked 19th in the nation entering Friday night's game at 18-5 Western Nebraska.
