Butler beats Coffeyville for fifth-straight win

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – The Butler baseball team ran its winning streak to five games with a 12-6 road win over Coffeyville at Walter Johnson Park on Wednesday.

The Grizzlies pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of seven Coffeyville errors as they led from start to finish in the nine-inning, non-conference game. Butler scored three runs in the top of the first inning. The closest Coffeyville would get would be 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth before the Grizzlies scored four runs in the top of the fifth. Coffeyville would later get as close as 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth, but Butler scored the final four runs of the game.

Dalton Wheat had a big day, going 3-5 at the plate with four runs scored and a run driven in. Jordan Knox was 3-4 at the plate with one run scored and three driven in. Derek Zeigenhirt was 2-4 with a pair of RBI. Trever Ezell also singled in his first three at-bats and drove in a run.

Butler pitcher T.J. Segebart started the game. He threw one inning, giving up a run on two walks and a sacrifice fly, despite not giving up a hit. Reliever Brennan Walker earned his first collegiate victory, throwing three innings. He retired the first six batters he faced, surrendering his only two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Butler got two scoreless innings from Kyle Vogt and one scoreless inning apiece from Brad Day and Gus Strunk to close the game.

The Grizzlies have now won five straight games – all on the road – after sweeping a conference series at Cloud County and winning at Coffeyville. Butler improves its record to 10-9 overall, including 9-6 in road games.

The Grizzlies will play their next game at home on Wednesday against Cowley at 3 p.m. at McDonald Stadium.
