Butler sweeps Independence, runs winning streak to three

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. – The Butler baseball team ran its winning streak to three games and completed a season sweep of Independence with a 9-6 road win on Thursday.

The Grizzlies, who had beaten Independence at home by a 15-7 score on Tuesday, overcame an early deficit on the road on Thursday.  The Grizzlies who got a run from Michael Cerullo on an RBI from Ty Redington in the top of the second, allowed four runs in the bottom of the inning to trail 4-1 behind starting pitcher Austin Dubsky

Butler quickly answered with a big third inning, scoring six runs to retake the lead at 7-4. The big hit of the inning was a two-run double by Jake Huscroft. Evan Koehler, Michael Cerullo, Alex Weiss and Ty Redington also drove in runs.

Jackson Rolfs would start the third inning on the mound, throwing two scoreless innings before allowing a run in the fifth.

By that time, Butler had scored two more runs in the top of that inning. Alex Weiss had a one-out double and came in to score on a single by Huscroft, who would score on a double by Dalton Wheat. That put the Grizzlies up 9-4.

Independence would get one run in the fifth against Rolfs and one in the sixth against Gibson Russ to get within three runs, but the Grizzlies had success in the bullpen with three scoreless innings to close out the contest. In the game, Brady Holcomb, Kyle Vogt, Grant Hamilton and Trever Ezell would each throw one scoreless inning in relief. Ezell earned the save, his first of the season and the 10th of his career.

Butler is now 3-3 on the season and will play a three-game series at home this weekend against Southeast (Neb.) with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game on Sunday, also at 1 p.m.
