The Butler baseball team split the first two games of a weekend series with Southeast Nebraska on Saturday, falling 3-2 in the first game but winning the second by a 5-1 score at McDonald Stadium.
The Grizzlies, now 4-4 on the season, finish the series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Southeast 3, Butler 2
The Grizzlies scored first, taking advantage of a pair of walks and a Southeast fielding error to go ahead 1-0 in the first inning.
That lead would hold up through three innings as starting pitcher Carson Corff was cruising. It wasn't until the fourth inning that Corff ran into trouble as Southeast strung together a leadoff walk, a double and a single to score a pair of runs.
Corff would bounce back to throw a scoreless fifth inning before coming out of the game. Reliever Kyle Vogt allowed a run in the sixth inning as Southeast pushed the lead to 3-1.
Reliever Grant Hamilton pitched a scoreless top of the seventh and the Grizzlies went to bat in the bottom of the inning, but could not score themselves, ending the game.
Game 2 – Butler 5, Southeast 1
Butler took the lead early when Dalton Wheat stole third and scored on a throwing error on the Southeast catcher.
The Storm answered with a run to tie the game on a double by Dylan Yost in the top of the second.
Meanwhile, pitcher Brady Holcomb threw five innings, allowing just one run to pick his second win of the season. Cade Wagers threw two-thirds of a scoreless inning and Trever Ezell threw an inning and a third of scoreless baseball to finish the game.
