The Butler baseball team continued its winning ways, sweeping a doubleheader from Allen County in dominating fashion on Thursday.
The Grizzlies won the first game 11-1 in five innings, then took the second game 10-1.
With the sweep, Butler has now won eight straight games and is 8-2 on the season. The Grizzlies will play another doubleheader with Allen County, this time on the road in Iola on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Butler 11, Allen County 1 (five innings)
Corbin Osburn got Butler rolling by striking out two Allen batters in a 1-2-3 top of the first inning. Osburn (2-1) would get credit for the complete-game victory, striking out seen and allowing just two hits and one run over five innings.
Butler scored in all but one inning. Hunter Aguirre hit a solo home run in the top of the first to get Butler's offensive attack rolling. Then in the fourth inning, Cory Slater hit a long two-run home run over the scoreboard in right field.
Slater was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Aguirre was 2-for-3 with two RBI, as was Bryant Klusener. Caleb Cox also drove in a pair of runs.
Game 2 – Butler 10, Allen County 1
Butler put up eight runs in the first inning, three of them coming on another long home run to right by Cory Slater. Butler batted around and leadoff man Channing Williams scored twice in the same inning.
Butler was then held scoreless for the next five innings against Allen County relievers Danial Wilson and Fabio Gonzalez.
Butler got two more runs in the seventh, despite no Butler batter having more than one hit. Josh Rogers and Bryant Klusener drove in two runs apiece for Butler.
On the mound, starter Isaiah Montoya-Gonzales was solid through six innings of work to earn the victory, his first of the season (1-1). He allowed five hits and just one run, while striking out five.
Landon Fry worked the final three innings of scoreless relief to earn the save, his first of the season.
