Butler splits with Bears in first double header of four-game set against Des Moines Area

The Butler Grizzlies split the first doubleheader of a four game series against the Des Moines Area College Bears at McDonald Stadium on Friday, winning game one 6-5 before a comeback bid fell just short in the second game, as the Grizzlies lost 9-7.

Game One

The Grizzlies were propelled to the win in game one via a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh from Sam Siegel, scoring Jackson Syring from second to win the game. Butler was led at the plate by Cooper Torres who blasted two home runs,  including a solo shot in the fifth inning to right center field that tied the game. Torres now leads the Grizzlies in homers this season with five. Butler plated six runs on nine hits in the victory.

Tyler Leachner earned the win, as he came on in the seventh inning and pitched a shutout. Braxton Hyde got the start and he went four innings, giving up five runs on six hits, and striking out six.

Game Two

The Grizzlies gave up five runs in the fourth inning, and despite scoring three runs in the sixth, were unable to come all the way back as the Bears earned the split. Jackson Syring earned two RBIs including a home run, giving him four homers on the year. The Grizzlies scored seven runs on 10 hits.

Tanner Leslie was tagged with the loss, going four innings and giving up five runs on six hits, and striking out four.

The Grizzlies record will go to 7-5 on the season with the split, but they'll still have the chance to win the series with another doubleheader against the Bears on Saturday, at McDonald Stadium, with the first game starting at 1:00 pm.
