After a successful stint as Butler's top assistant, BJ McVay became the sixth head coach in Butler's baseball history, stepping into the role vacated when Steve Johnson accepted the head coach position at Fort Hays State. McVay is now entering his 13th season as Butler's head coach and 19th overall as a member of the Grizzlies' coaching staff. McVay is 392-299 as head coach of the Grizzlies.

McVay became the Butler Baseball all-time coaching wins leader this past season on February 22nd, 2023 when he collected his 356th career win, passing former Grizzly coach B.D. Parker.

This past year, McVay guided the Grizzlies to 39 wins, tying his personal record for coaching wins in a single season. The Grizzlies also advanced past the first round of the Region VI Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. This was the Butler Baseball team's fifth consecutive year winning at least 35 games and fifth straight year recording at least 20 wins in conference play.

In the 2022 season, McVay led the Grizzlies to a 35-24 record and a fourth-place finish the in the KJCCC-West. It was the Grizzlies' fourth consecutive year posting 30-plus wins overall and 20-plus wins in conference play.
