Beginning his 42nd year at Butler, Steve Braet is widely recognized as one of the top defensive line coaches in the country.

Now in his 44th season overall as a collegiate coach, Braet is the common link to all six national titles at Butler: 1981, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2008, having served on the Butler coaching staff for each of those championship seasons. He has helped guide Butler to an amazing 22 Jayhawk Conference championships. He has an overall record of 336-110-2 in his 41 seasons with the Grizzlies.

Braet has gained a well-deserved reputation for molding and developing outstanding defensive linemen. Under Braet's direction, Butler has become a showcase for outstanding defensive linemen over the years, with several receiving All-American recognition.

He has coached 11 future NFL defensive linemen and currently has three former players on NFL rosters (Cornellius Carradine, San Francisco; Demarcus Lawrence, Dallas; Ufomba Kamula, Patriots). He has coached 33 All-Americans and in a four-year span had two players named NJCAA National Defensive Players of the year, including Cornellius Carradine in 2010. In short, Coach Braet is very successful in bringing out the best in the best.

Braet came to Butler in 1979 where he served as defensive line coach from 1979-1981. In 1981, he won his first national championship as Butler went 12-0. The following year, he became Wichita State University's defensive line coach for the 1982 and 1983 seasons. In 1982, WSU enjoyed their best season in two decades earning an 8-3 record.

In 1984, Coach Braet returned to Butler, where he has helped the Grizzlies win five more national championships and 21 more conference titles.

Braet was the recepient of the 2006 Samson Equipment Junior College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year. In 2017, Breat was inducted into the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame. 

A 1976 graduate of Friends University where he played nose guard and played in two bowl games, Braet is married to the former Dana Griffiths. They have two grown sons, (Taylor and Corey), two granddaughters (Brittany and Delaney),  three grandsons (James), (Johnny) and (Briley).
