Men hold off late surge from Cowley to improve to 2-0

The Butler men had to hold on at the end for a 67-62 win over Cowley County on Saturday at the Power Plant.

 

Butler fell behind early on by a 9-5 score, but the deficit didn't last long. The Grizzlies took a 13-11 lead on a basket by Ja'ln Williams with 12:07 left to go in the half and the Grizzlies would lead by as many as eight in the first half following consecutive layups by Eric Watson and Shomari Triggs made it 27-19 with 3:06 left in the period. Butler still led 30-24 at the half.

 

Cowley would lead briefly lead early in the second period, but Jordan Madrid-Andrews took control of the game by scoring five straight points and the Grizzlies went back in front 38-34 with 15:16 to play.

 

Butler's lead grew to as many as eight points after Larry Fitzgerald scored to make it 60-52 with three minutes to play. Cowley would hit a couple of late 3-pointers and eventually got within a single point at 63-62 with 1:15 to play.

 

The Grizzlies would get just enough from the free throw line to hold off Cowley in the final minute for the win.

 

Sean Osler led Butler with 13 points while Jordan Madrid-Adrews added 11 for the Grizzlies.

 

The Grizzlies are now 2-0 on the season and will play at home on Tuesday against Allen County.
