Butler sweeps series against Cowley with 69-65 road win

The Butler mens basketball team earned a series sweep over the Cowley County Tigers with a 69-65 road win at Arkansas City on Saturday.

Eric Watson led the Grizzlies with 13 points, while Shomari Triggs, Jordan Madrid-Andrews and Trent Richardson each added 11 points in the win.

Cowley raced out to an early 16-5 lead in the first half and still led 26-17 with 6:42 remaining before halftime. However, Butler closed out the half with a 13-3 run to take a 30-29 edge into the locker room.

The Tigers quickly took back the lead early in the second half, but the Grizzlies would tie the game on a Larry Fitzgerald three-pointer. The trey sparked a key 9-0 Butler run to give the Grizzlies a 46-40 lead midway through the half.

Tied at 50-50 with 7:10 to play, the Grizzlies made a 6-0 run that was capped with an alley-oop dunk by Eric Watson. Butler would not trail again, although Cowley would close within two points. The Grizzlies hit 8-of-10 foul shots in the final 1:23 on the contest to seal the victory.

With the win, Butler moves to 6-2 on the season and has now won four straight contests. Next up for the Grizzlies will be a road contest at Iola on Tuesday against Allen County.
