Grizzlies suffer first loss of season at No. 4 Hutch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Despite a 32-point effort from sophomore guard Shomari Triggs, the Butler men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season - a 96-85 defeat to No. 4 Hutchinson Saturday night at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson snapped Butler's three-game winning streak at the Sports Arena in what was the first contest between the two rivals since the Grizzlies moved to the Jayhawk East division. Butler (2-1 overall) led briefly at the beginning of the contest, but trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Butler closed within two, 34-32, with 1:55 left in the first half when Larry Fitzgerald hit a three-pointer at the top of the key. However, the Blue Dragons went on a 9-0 run to close out the half and went into the locker room with a 43-32 lead.

Hutchinson put together a 14-3 run to push the margin to 18 points, 61-43, with just over 13 minutes remaining in the second half.

But the Grizzlies would not go away quietly, as Butler would get within seven points with 4:51 to play. Trailing 76-62, Butler used a quick 7-0 run, getting a three-pointer from Triggs and four points from Dominique O'Connor.

Butler closed within five, 88-83, with 1:41 left when Lamar Wofford-Humphrey hit 1-of-2 foul shots. That would be as close as the Grizzlies would get, as Hutch pulled away with a closing 6-2 run to end the game.

Both teams scored 53 points in the second half, with Triggs scoring 22 of his game-high 32 points in the half. Sean Goodwin added 15 points and six rebounds, while Larry Fitzgerald finished with 14 points.

Hutchinson was led by sophomore Kadeem Allen, who finished with 29 points and 11 assists. Darrick Wood and DeShawn Freeman each had 20 points.

Next up for the Grizzlies will be a home contest against Tabor JV on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
