Butler improves to 4-1 with road win at Johnson

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – With four players scoring in double figures, the Butler men defeated Johnson County 92-70 on Saturday in non-conference action.

Butler (4-1 overall) was led in scoring by sophomore guards Shomari Triggs and Bakari Triggs, who scored 16 points each. Larry Fitzgerald added 12 points, while Sean Goodwin finished with 11 points.

The Grizzlies used a strong first half offensively, shooting nearly 57 percent (19-of-33) and never trailed in the contest. Johnson tied the contest at 6-6 early in the half, but Butler put a quick 7-0 run. Larry Fitzgerald hit a three-pointer from the left wing, then Bakari Triggs and Shomari Triggs made baskets in the lane off consecutive steals.

Butler made an 11-4 run late in the second half to take a 50-32 lead, capped by a three-pointer from Dominique O'Connor. The Grizzlies would take a 19-point lead into the break. Butler would lead by as many as 28 points in the second half, using a 11-2 run to start the half.

The Grizzlies shot 50 percent (34-of-68) from the field for the game and hit 17-of-21 free throws. Defensively, Butler forced 21 turnovers and had 11 steals.

Johnson's Pat Jones led all scorers with 32 points, while Preston Oakes added 23.

Butler will next host No. 4-ranked Hutchinson (4-0) Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Dragons defeated Butler 96-85 back on Nov. 9 at the Sports Arena.
