Butler men pull away late for 75-67 win over Brown Mackie

The Butler men didn't need a dramatic late-game comeback or overtime to beat Brown Mackie this time, earning a 75-67 win after controlling the final 10 minutes of the game in the second meeting of the season between the two teams.

Eight days earlier in Salina, the Grizzlies had to come from 16 down in the final four minutes just to force an overtime period before winning 94-92.

On Wednesday in the Power Plant, Brown Mackie led several times in the first half and was up 41-40 at the break. The Lions, though, had their last lead at 45-44 with 18 minutes to play. Butler took the lead on a layup by Shomari Triggs 30 seconds later and the Grizzlies never looked back.

Butler gained more momentum on a 3-pointer by Ernest Burton with 7:39 to play that made the score 62-55. The Grizzlies would get up by as many as 10 points on two different occasions before winning by eight.

Butler held Brown Mackie is its lowest offensive output of the production – 13 points fewer than the Lions had in a 79-77 win over Independence last week and 32 points under their season average of 99 points per game.

"I think the biggest thing is we just tried to take away what they did well and we kept them from scoring 90 points again," Butler coach Mike Bargen said. "We just have to defend together. I was really happy with the win because they've given a lot of good teams a lot of problems."

Butler was led by Larry Fitzgerald, who scored 18 points in the win. Butler also got 16 points from Shomari Triggs, 13 from Bakari Triggs and 10 from Trent Richardson, all in the second half.

The Grizzlies now have double digits in wins on the season, improving to 10-2 overall. Butler will now go on the road to face Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa on Saturday at 7 p.m.
