Butler men hold off Allen County for first conference road win

IOLA, Kan. – The Butler men held off a hard-charging Allen County squad in the second half to earn their first conference road win of the season by a 90-78 score.

The Grizzlies raced out to a big early lead as Bakari Triggs scored seven of Butler's first 15 points. The Grizzlies would go up 31-11 with 7:30 to play in the half after a layup by Lamar Wofford-Humphrey. A basket at the buzzer by Sean Goodwin put the Grizzlies up 44-23 at the intermission.

By that point in the game, the Grizzlies had drawn four offensive fouls and would draw seven total charges in the game. Allen County, however, would chip away at the lead throughout the second half. The Red Devils got as close as five points with 44.6 seconds to play, but the Grizzlies were able to score seven points at the free throw line in the closing seconds to hold off Allen.

Larry Fitzgerald led the Grizzlies with 22 points, while Sean Goodwin scored 18 points and Bakari Triggs scored 15.

The Grizzlies are now 19-6 overall and are 5-2 in Jayhawk East Conference play, getting within a half-game of first-place Independence, which was idle on Saturday. Butler will be back in action on Monday with a 7:30 p.m. home game against Coffeyville. That will be the makeup of Wednesday's game that was postponed due to weather.
