PARSONS, Kan. – The Butler men have now won 20 or more games for the fourth time in the past six seasons after winning at Labette by a 75-70 score on Wednesday.
Butler is now 20-9 overall and remains in third place in the Jayhawk East at 6-5. Butler finishes the regular season on Saturday at Neosho County. A win would secure the top-four conference finish needed to host a first-round playoff game.
Butler jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead, but Labette had closed the gap to just three points later in the first half at 17-14. That's when the Grizzlies went on a 12-0 run. After a layup by Sean Goodwin, the Grizzlies had their biggest lead of the half at 29-14 with 10:10 to play in the period.
Meanwhile, Bakari Triggs was on fire from the outside, making four 3-pointers and scoring 14 points in the first half. His efforts helped the Grizzlies take a 41-30 lead at the intermission.
Labette started chipping away in the second half. Bakari Triggs would hit another 3-pointer to hold the Cardinals at bay for a bit, making it a 58-49 game with 10 minutes to go in the game.
Labette kept narrowing the gap, eventually making it a 65-61 game with 4:40 to play, but the Cardinals would go scoreless for more than three minutes. Butler would get two free throws from Sean Goodwin to put the Grizzlies up 67-61 with 2:37 to go and the Grizzlies would make enough free throws in the final minute to hold on for the victory.
Bakari Triggs led Butler with 24 points, making all five of his 3-point attempts. Sean Goodwin and Larry Fitzgerald had 12 points apiece while Trent Richardson had 11 points and Shomari Triggs had 10.
