Butler men rout Northern OK-Tonkawa at SunGroup Classic

The Butler men avenged an earlier loss to Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa, beating the Mavericks 86-63 on Saturday in the Power Plant in the final game of the SunGroup Classic.

Butler, which lost by 24 in Tonkawa on Nov. 3, beat the Mavericks by 23. The 47-point turnaround is believed to be the second-largest in Butler history. In November 2010, Butler lost by 49 points at Independence, but beat the Pirates by two points later that month in El Dorado.

The Grizzlies have now won four straight games after that loss at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa, which had dropped Butler to 0-3 on the season at the time.

Butler led 8-2 early with six points from Ken Perkins, then went on a 17-1 run after Northern hit a pair of free throws. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Derrick Byrd put Butler up 25-5 with 9:13 left in the half.

The lead continued to grow in the first half, reaching 30 points when Jacolby Harris nailed a 3-pointer with 1:03 to play that made the score 45-15. Harris also made two free throws at the end of the period as Butler took a 47-17 lead at halftime.

Northern would cut into Butler's big lead in the second half, getting it back to within 20 points within the first five minutes but never getting closer than 17 points.

Derrick Byrd and Will Adler led Butler with 14 points apiece while Ken Perkins and Jacolby Harris each had 12 points. Both Adler and Perkins had double-doubles as Perkins had 14 rebounds and Adler had 10.

Butler will be at home on Tuesday for a game against On-Point Academy, which is a prep school.
