Second half surge lifts Butler men over Washburn JV

The Butler men extended its winning streak to six straight with a 93-70 home win over Wasburn JV on Friday on the first day of the McDonald's Classic.

The Grizzlies led by just one at the half, but put up 53 points in the second half to pull away from the Ichabods.

Butler had led by 11 twice in the first half, but Washburn would finish the half on a 19-9 run. The Ichabods tied the game 39-39 after a Tom Huppe 3-pointer with 1:59 left in the half. Butler would get a free throw from Travis House to put the Grizzlies ahead 40-39 at the break.

Butler led by five before getting seven straight points from Caelan Neal on a 3-pointer and a pair of layups. That put the Grizzlies up 64-52 with 12:50 to play.

Damien Akao had a layup with 3:53 to play to put Butler up by 20 for the first time at 83-63. Butler led by as many as 25 points.

Caelan Neal led Butler with 18 points, making seven of 11 shots from the floor. He also had six rebounds, and assist and three steals. Travis House had 16 points and Derrick Byrd had 13. Ken Perkins had nine points and led the team with seven rebounds.

Butler is now 6-3, having won all six games since starting the year 0-3. The Grizzlies will be at home again on Saturday to take on Labette (1-10) in the second day of the McDonald's Classic.
