Walker 3-pointer lifts Butler over Sunrise Christian Prep 60-57

Romalas Walker hit a 3-pointer with 3:15 left to lift the Butler men to a 60-57 win over Sunrise Christian Prep on Tuesday at the Power Plant.

Walker's bucket broke a 57-57 tie and neither team scored the remainder of the contest. For Butler, the win is the eighth straight as the Grizzlies finish non-conference play at 8-3.

Butler trailed by four points early on, but would take the lead with a 3-pointer from Travis House. Caelan Neal would score five straight with a 3-pointer and a dunk to give Butler a 20-14 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half.

Butler would lead by as many as eight points, but Sunrise cut the gap to two points later in the half. Neither team would score a field goal in the final 5:57 of the half, but two free throws from Damien Akao with 3:50 left in the half put Butler up 33-29. That would be the score at the half.

Sunrise would take a 41-40 lead with 14:47 to play in the game before Butler went on an 11-0 run. Derrick Byrd scored seven points during the run, including a 3-pointer to put the Grizzlies up 51-41 with 11:35 to play.

Sunrise rallied back with a 16-4 run to take a 57-55 lead with 4:35 to play. However, Butler answered quickly with a layup by Will Adler to tie the game at 57-all and Sunrise would not score again.

Butler's only bucket in the final four minutes would be the Walker 3-pointer that made it 60-57. Sunrise would get the ball back with 12.9 seconds left, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark, and Butler held on for the win.

Caelan Neal led Butler with 13 points, while Will Adler and Daven Joseph scored 11 points apiece. Joseph also had seven rebounds to lead Butler in that category. Travis House had nine points on three 3-pointers.

With non-conference play completed, the Grizzlies will head to Liberal on Monday to take on Seward County in the first game of Jayhawk Conference play.
