Women win Jayhawk West title; Burchell and Busienei honored

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Butler track and field teams were highly decorated following the 2012 Jayhawk Conference/Region VI championships on Sunday at Ahearn Fieldhouse on the Kansas State University campus.

The Butler women were named the 2012 Jayhawk West Conference champions, edging out Barton County and Cloud County. The ladies also finished sixth in the Region VI standings.

The men were thrd in the Jayhawk West and also finished sixth in Region VI.

Individually, Butler claimed two of the highest honors at the meet as Remona Burchell was the female winner and and Kelvin Busienei was the male winner of the the Track Athletes of the Meet honors. Burchell won the 60, 200 and ran the fastest leg on the 4 x 400 relay (along with Latesha Bigby, Carole Idolphone and Juliet Gourdet) that finished third overall. Busienei won the 1000, Mile and ran the fastest leg on the 4 x 800 relay that also won the Region VI title.

Other Butler runners with high finishes were Cesar Sanabria, who finished second in the mile, posting the exact same time as Busienei in an event where either runner could have been named the winner. Sanabria also placed third in the 3000.

Devery Robley finished second in the men's 800 to qualify for nationals, while the men's distance medley relay (Mathew Komen, Aaron Cain, Coty Williams and Heber Jimenez) finished third. Leroy Moore qualified for nationals in the 400.

For the women, Butler scored well in the pentathlon as Latesha Bigby finished second in the event with a score that is the second-best in Butler history. Paige Slayton finished fourth in the event.

Those athletes that have qualified for nationals will now gear up for the NJCAA Championships on March 2-3 in Charleston, Ill.
