The Butler indoor track and field team continued its 2013 season with two meets this past weekend at Iowa State University and Highland CC.
At the Iowa State Classic in Ames, the Butler teams ran into tough NCAA competition, but still performed well. On the girls side, Nhaieemah Horne and Jonelle Reinert led the way just missing the national qualifying in the 600 yard run.
At the Highland Scottie Classic, the teams got a chance to compete well against mainly other two-year schools with just a few NAIA schools. For the men, Cameron Hampton led the way by hitting the national qualifying mark in the 55 meter dash. The teams also brought home nine first-place finishes, including two wins by Israel Mendoza (mile and 3000 meters). Other first-place individual winners were Abiane Collymore (1000 meters), Fiona Masai (mile), Justin Breaux (200 meters), Paris Carson (500 meters). The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Carole Idolphine, Jonelle Reinert, Nhaieemah Horne and Abiane Collymore also finished first, as did the men's distance medley relay team of Taylor Parker, Demarquis Mims, Coty Williams and Heber Jimenez.
The next action for the Grizzlies track team will start Feb. 13-14 at Highland with the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon. The rest of the meet will be Feb. 15 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
