WICHITA, Kan. — The Butler track and field team set six personal records and won two events at the two-day K.T. Woodman Classic this past weekend at Wichita State University's Cessna Stadium.
Butler had 14 top-ten finishes while competing against NCAA and NAIA schools at the Classic. Freshman Antonio Coleman (men's 400-meter dash) and Valeriya Kostiuk (women's high jump) coming away with individual wins in their respective events.
Coleman and sophomore Emmanuel Mwewa finished 1-2 in the 400m dash, as both finished with personal-best times. Coleman won the event with a time of 47.88 seconds, while Mwewa followed at 48.10 for a runner-up finish.
Kostiuk had the top clearance in the high jump, gliding over the bar at 1.73 meters (5 feet, 8 inches) enroute to her fourth straight first-place finish during the outdoor season.
In men's high jump, freshman Landon Cuskelly placed second with a 2.11-meter clearance. Cuskelly needed all three attempts on each of his last three clearances to secure second, while Iowa Central's Jah-Nahi Perinchief won the event by with a jump of 2.26 meters.
Sophomore Lamarion Arnold and freshman Quintaveon Poole took third and fourth in the men's 100-meter dash, running 10.45 and 10.5 times in the finals. Poole's time of 10.50 was a personal best on the season.
Butler had four sprinters in the top 10 during 100m preliminaries, with sophomore Ricky Grant recording the second-best preliminary time at 10.54 seconds. Along with Arnold and Poole in the finals, freshman Akeem Sirleaf placed seventh at 10.55, while Grant was 12th with a 10.76 time.
Arnold, Poole and Sirleaf teamed up with freshman James Hambrick for a runner-up finish in the men's 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.91 seconds.
Also for the men, sophomore Mohammed Abubakar finished third in the men's long jump, with his longest leap coming at 7.64 meters (25 feet, 3/4 inch). Sophomore Shevon Blair finished 10th in the 800-meter run (1:56.77) and freshman Colin Reichenberger had a personal-best time of 15.11 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. Reichenberger placed 11th in the event while setting a national-qualifying time.
On the women's side, sophomore Kristina Vujanic had a pair of top-ten finishes for the Grizzlies. On Friday, Vujanic finished seventh in the women's 800-meter run (2:22.09), then followed up with a fifth-place performance in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:03.54 on Saturday.
In women's pole vault, sophomore Rachael Buzanowski was eighth with a top clearance of 3.37 meters (11 feet, 3/4 inches). Freshman Courtney Willis also had an eighth-place finish in the women's 400-meter dash (58.58 seconds).
Freshman Alex Fulton also set a personal-best time in the 10,000-meter run, running a national-qualifying time of 44:45.09 during Friday's distance carnival.
Next up for Butler track is the John Jacobs Invitational this Saturday at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.
