GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Both the Butler men and women lead the Region VI Outdoor standings after Friday's events in Garden City.
After three events, the men have scored 34 points and lead runner-up Cloud County by 21 points. Meanwhile, the Butler women have 29 points, 13 more than second-place Coffeyville.
Rain postponed a portion of the schedule, as Friday's field events, short sprints and short hurdle preliminaries to Saturday.
For the men, sophomore Nolan Hesse won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:30.61, while freshmen Jacob Hesse (34:39.84, 3rd) and Emmanuel Biwott (34:55.23, 5th) also placed.
Butler had all three athletes place in the men's decathlon, with freshman Colin Reichenberger finishing third with 5,365 points. Josh Sharp placed fifth, while Keaton McGuire was sixth.
Reichenberger won the 110-meter hurdles, took second in the 100-meter dash and placed third in pole vault, javelin and the 1,500-meter run. Sharp won both the 100-meter dash and long jump events, while McGuire took first in the javelin and was runner-up in the high jump.
In the men's 4x800-meter relay, Butler placed eighth as the team of Shevon Blair, Ismael Ramirez, James Hambrick and Trevions Rouchon ran a time of 8:51.29.
On the women's side, freshman Alexxis Milner was runner-up in the heptathlon, while sophomore Kristina Vujanic was third. Milner had top finishes in the 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, and long jump events.
Vujanic, Helen Thames, Kalynn Simpson and Sheila Samoei placed third in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:11.40.
Samoei also finished third in the women's 10,000-meter run (42:27.98), while freshmen Janie Salinas (44:05.94) and Alex Fulton (44:09.95) placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
The meet resumes tomorrow, with field events beginning at 10:00 a.m. and running events starting at 1:00 p.m..
