Serem earns All-American honors at NJCAA championships

FORT DODGE, Iowa – The Butler cross country teams finished their seasons at the NJCAA National Championships on Saturday, with the women finishing 15th and the men placing 30th.

Individually, Edwin Serem earned second-team All-American status by finishing ninth in a time of 25.51.1 for the 8k course. He was followed by Israel Mendoza (155th in 28:49), Max Surmeier (232th in 30:16), Cody Frye (279th in 33:36) and Alfred Larry (297th in 41:49).

Central Arizona College was the men's team champ, beating runner-up Iowa Central, who was the host school. South Plains (Texas) was third. Allen County and Colby were the top Kansas teams, placing sixth and seventh, respectively. Other Region VI schools to place were Garden City (11th), Highland (17th) and Cowley (22nd).

On the women's side, Madison Wedekind was Butler's leading finisher, placing 40th individually in 19:37.6. That time was 35 seconds faster than her time in the Region VI championships when she won the Jayhawk West Conference title. Abiane Collymore was 61st in 20:01. Butler's other runners were Janell Kidd (98th in 20:29.7), Hayley Ribordy (121st in 20:53) Lindi Young (184th in 21:43), Kendell Notah (189th in 21:46) and Tricia Trupe (222nd in 22:01).

The women were the second-highest Kansas team behind Johnson County, which finished 12th. Hutchinson was 17th and Dodge City was 22nd. Iowa Central was the national champion, followed by Central Arizona and Gillette (Wyo.).
