The Butler softball team was well represented on the KJCCC All-Jayhawk West team, which was released Tuesday. The Grizzlies led the conference with a total of seven players earning honors – including four players named to the All-Conference first team.

Sophomore third baseman Monica Islava, along with three freshmen – outfielder Megan Wurts, pitcher Jenny Hittinger and pitcher Kaelah McMullin – earned first-team honors, while sophomore second baseman Aujanae McCoy, freshman first baseman Gracie Bogle and freshman utility player Morgan Heckart was named to the second team. In addition to receiving first-team honors, Wurts was also named the Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year.

Islava, from Nogales, Ariz., was Butler's offensive triple-crown performer, leading the team in batting average (.447), home runs (15) and runs batted in (61). She also led the Grizzlies in doubles (19), on-base percentage (.513) and slugging percentage (.943) while stealing 17 bases and scoring 48 runs. Islava was also named KJCCC Jayhawk West Player of the Week honors for March 9-15, as she hit a red-hot .739 at the plate with four home runs, eight doubles and 20 runs batted in. Islava was also a second-team All-Jayhawk West selection at shortstop as a freshman.

Wurts, from Olathe, led Butler in hits (66), runs scored (60) and finished second on the team in numerous offensive categories – batting average (.431), runs batted in (57), stolen bases (43), on-base percentage (.474) and slugging (.680).

Hittinger, from Cibolo, Texas, finished the season with a 16-6 record, a team-leading 1.47 earned-run average and recorded 92 strikeouts. She threw a team-high 143.1 innings pitched, giving up just 30 earned runs on 125 hits. The freshman righthander was named KJCCC Jayhawk West Pitcher of the Week (March 9-15), as she went 3-0 with a 0.34 ERA and fanned 12 batters in 20.1 innings pitched.

McMullin, from Paola, went 16-9 overall with a 3.19 earned-run average and led the team with 109 strikeouts and pitching appearances (28). The freshman righty tossed 142.2 innings and allowed 65 earned runs on 150 hits. McMullin was a two-time KJCCC Jayhawk West Pitcher of the Week, earning the first weekly honors (March 16-22) by going 1-0 with five strikeouts in a complete-game shutout against MCC-Maple Woods. She then won the honor for the week of April 6-12, going 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched.

Playing first base and pitcher, Bogle hit .306 with five home runs and 24 runs batted in. In nine games as a pitcher, the Springdale, Ark., freshman went 2-0 with three starts and a 4.74 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched.

McCoy, from Wichita, led the KJCCC Division I with 48 stolen bases and was third on the team with a .388 batting average. The sophomore speedster scored 56 runs and had 62 hits with one home run and 15 RBI. As a freshman, McCoy earned first-team All-Jayhawk West honors at second base.

Heckart, hailing from Ottumwa, Iowa, finished with a .345 average and hit three home runs and 39 runs batted in. She was second on the team with 13 doubles and scored 38 runs with 51 hits.

Butler finished 34-15 overall and 20-4 in conference play while winning its fifth straight Jayhawk West conference title and its eighth title in the last 10 seasons.
