Butler softball sweeps Cowley in home doubleheader

Butler softball earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Cowley on Tuesday at East Park.

The Grizzlies (31-4 overall) won a wild 15-10 contest in the opening game, then run-ruled the Tigers 10-0 in the nightcap.

With the two victories, Butler eclipsed the 30-win plateau for the seventh straight season under head coach Doug Chance.

Butler returns to conference play on Wednesday with a home twinbill against Pratt beginning at 2 p.m.

Butler 15, Cowley 10

Butler led 8-1 after one inning thanks to a three-run home run by Becca Schulte and a three-run double by Megan Wurts. Mikayla Waggnor and Drea Lesure also drove in a run each in the first inning.

Cowley would rally back by scoring five runs in the third, then taking a 9-8 lead in the fourth on a three-run homer by Morgan Kirk.

The Grizzlies answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Becca Schulte led off the inning by reaching first on an error, then Brynn Minor was hit with a pitch. After a double steal, Schulte scored from third on a wild pitch and Minor scored on a wild throw by the catcher in an attempt to throw out Schulte.

Leading 10-9, Butler added two more runs in the fifth, then added three insurance runs in the sixth behind a Danae Bina RBI single and a two-run double by Megan Wurts.

Wurts matched a career-high with five runs batted in while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Bohanan, Schulte and Lesure each had two hits for Butler, who finished with 12 hits. Lesure and Bina led the Grizzlies with three runs scored each.

Jennifer Hittinger (14-1) was credited with the win, despite giving up nine hits, nine runs and three walks in four innings. Only four of the nine runs were earned. Brynn Minor picked up her second save of the season, tossing three innings and allowing one run on four hits.

Butler 10, Cowley 0 - 5 innings

Megan Wurts led off the first inning with an inside-the-park home run down the right-field line. Later in the inning, Tyesha Morgan flied out to left field to score Morgan Bohanan to give Butler a 2-0 lead.

Butler added five runs in the second inning, beginning with a Wurts single to right to score Drea Lesure. Bohanan followed with a two-run single to center to drive in Wurts and Danae Bina. Becca Schulte and Morgan Heckart also drove in a run.

Up 7-0 in the fourth, Bohanan padded Butler's lead with an RBI single, then Mikayla Waggnor added a two-run single.

Wurts led the Grizzlies offensively with three runs while going 2-for-2 and driving in two runs.

Regan Mergele (15-3) had a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out three.
