Wurts, Bohanan named to NJCAA All-American first team

Butler sophomore Megan Wurts and freshman Morgan Bohanan have been named to the NJCAA Division I Softball All-American first team, as released by the national office on Wednesday.

Wurts and Bohanan become the 12th and 13th players to receive All-American honors at Butler under head coach Doug Chance. The two NJCAA selections marks the second time in the program's history that the Grizzlies have had multiple All-Americans in the same season. This is also the fourth straight season Butler has had an NJCAA All-American.

The duo of Wurts and Bohanan were key offensive components atop the Grizzlies' lineup, helping Butler to its first national title and a 53-4 overall record while winning a sixth straight conference title and its seventh Region VI title in the last 10 seasons.

Megan Wurts, OF, Olathe (Kan.)

Wurts led Butler in runs scored (77), stolen bases (38) and was tied for the team lead in triples (4). Hitting second in the lineup before being moved to the leadoff spot later in the season, Wurts hit .448 with nine home runs and 59 runs batted in. Playing in all 57 games, she ranked second among the team in doubles (24), hits (77) and slugging percentage (.791). In conference play, Wurts led the KJCCC D-I in runs (32) and home runs (7). She also earned conference player of the week honors for Week 1.

In 57 games, Wurts failed to record either a hit, walk or run in just four games, as she recorded a .520 on-base percentage (fourth-best for Butler). Wurts opened the season as one of the Grizzlies' top hitters, recording at least one hit in the first 12 games as she hit .538 (21-for-39) with six doubles, two triples, 11 runs batted in and 13 runs scored. Including walks, Wurts reached base in 18 straight games to begin the season.

At nationals, Wurts hit .368 (7-for-19) with six runs scored and three runs batted in, including a game-winning single to score three runs against Chipola, Fla., in the championship game.

Along with first-team NJCAA All-American honors, Wurts also received first-team All-Jayhawk Conference Division I honors.

Morgan Bohanan, INF, Goddard (Kan.)

Bohanan, who played both first and third base for the Grizzlies, led the team in batting average (.490), doubles (30) and on-base percentage (.562) while compiling 77 hits (tied for a team second-best) in 157 at bats. The Goddard native also hit three home runs, drove in 54 runs, recorded 20 base on balls and scored 46 runs. In 24 conference games, Bohanan led all KJCCC Division I hitters with a .528 average and 14 doubles.

During a 25-game stretch (March 21 to May 5), Bohanan hit safely in 22 games while compiling a .589 average (43-for-73) with 18 doubles, 31 runs batted in and 30 runs scored over that span. Bohanan's performance at the plate ranked her as high as second in the nation in batting average and finished 13th. She had a game-high four hits in three games, including a 4-for-5 performance with five runs scored against Garden City on March 5.

At the NJCAA National Tournament, Bohanan hit .421 (8-for-19) with four doubles and four runs scored. In the opening game against Howard (TX), Bohanan was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in an 11-2 win.

In addition to All-American honors, Bohanan was also a first-team All-Jayhawk Conference Division I selection and an All-American honorable-mention offense selection by Fastpitch News.
