Butler's Mergele named NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Week

Butler sophomore pitcher Regan Mergele has been named the NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 13-19.

In four appearances over the weekend, Mergele went 4-0 with 16 2/3 innings pitched, allowing just four hits, no earned runs and striking out 30 batters.

On Friday against Alvin (TX), Mergele had four no-hit innings and fanned seven batters in a 3-0 victory.

Mergele then threw 4 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts in Saturday's 4-1 win over Des Moines Area. Mergele allowed two hits and no earned runs.

Mergele picked up both wins Sunday against Rose State. In Game 1, Mergele threw three shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out seven in a 12-0 run-rule victory over the Raiders.

The righthander entered the second game against Rose State as a relief pitcher with Butler trailing 5-3 after one inning. Mergele finished the contest, throwing six innings of one-hit ball while striking out seven batters.

On the season, Mergele is 5-0 with a 0.59 earned-run average. Through 30 1/3 innings, Mergele has 42 strikeouts and has allowed just two earned runs on 12 hits.
