The Butler softball team pounded out 44 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Dodge City on Tuesday at East Park, including tying a school record for runs in a game.
Butler won the first game by a 30-2 score and beat Dodge City 14-0 in the second.
The 30 runs in the first game are the most scored in a game since Butler beat Allen County 30-6 on April 10, 2005. The 28 runs is the largest margin of victory in program history.
Butler now sits tied atop the Jayhawk Conference standings with a 2-0 record. The Grizzlies are 11-3 overall.
Butler will be back in action on Wednesday with yet another conference doubleheader, taking on conference newcomer Northwest Kansas Tech at 2 p.m.
Game 1 - Butler 30. Dodge City 2
Butler was retired in order in the first inning, but the bats came to life following a solo homer by Alexis Reed in the second inning. Anna Williams would hit a two-run homer in the same inning as Butler put up four runs.
In the third inning, a grand slam from Makensy Pankers ignites a 10-run inning as the Grizzlies went up 14-0.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher Celina Sullivan was dominating Dodge City batters. She struck out the side in the first inning and struck out eight in three shutout innings of work, allowing just one hit.
Dodge City would get one run in the fourth and another in the fifth innings against reliever Brianna Robinson.
Butler got its fourth inning started with yet another homer, this one a three-run shot by Kenzie Young. The Grizzlies would go on to score 16 runs. Butler batted around twice, with Anna Williams and Meghan Gutierrez each having three plate appearances.
Pankers drive in five runs on two hits, while Young and Williams each had four RBI.
Game 2 - Butler 14, Dodge City 0
Butler continued to pitch well, posting a shutout in the second game. Maddie Siemer struck out the side in the first and second innings and would hurl three hitless innings while strikeout out seven. She did have to work out of a jam in the third as she loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter with no outs. She came back to get a strikeout, fly ball to shallow center and a groundout to preserve the shut out.
Kaylee Burnett threw the final two innings of the combined shutout.
Offensively, Butler got on the board early with an RBI double by Peyton Reynolds. Later in the inning, Brianna Robinson slammed a three-run home run to left. Moments later, Anngie Salinas hit a solo homer as Butler went back-to-back.
Butler would get one more homer in the game, that being a two-run shot to center, her second of the day.
