Grizzlies sweep Cougars at home both in run-rule fashion

The Butler Grizzlies continued their hot start to the season, winning two games against the Barton Cougars, both in run rule fashion, winning the first game 8-0 before finishing the sweep against the Cougars, 14-3 in the second game at East Park on Wednesday.

Game One

The Grizzlies made short work of the first game of the series, scoring six runs in the second inning to cruise to an 8-0 win. Paige Paxton starred in the game, putting four runs across the board with two hits, busting the game open with a three RBI double. Emily Adler hit the only home run of the game, a solo shot to center field in the second.

Emma Koeneke was her usual unhittable self, earning her eighth win of the season and giving up no runs on only two hits in three innings of work. Kendyl LeGrand and Ariel Matula combined in relief to help seal the shutout, as the three Grizzlies pitchers combined for no runs on only four hits, striking out 10 batters.

Game Two

The Grizzlies scored nine runs in the first inning to put the second game out of reach. Nine different players hit RBIs and two different players, Reese Briggs and Brionna Woods, homered. Woods hit her first home run of the season in the fourth, a solo shot to left, and the Grizzlies totaled 14 runs on 10 hits.

Back-to-back Jayhawk Conference pitcher of the week, Alyson Montgomery, earned her seventh win of the season and was sensational again, pitching three innings and giving up only one run on two hits, striking out five. Kendyl Anderson pitched two innings and gave up two runs but struck out three to seal the victory.

With the wins, Butler improves to 15-1 on the year, and 7-1 in conference play. The Grizzlies will travel to Dodge City for a double header with the Conquistadors on Sunday.
