Grizzlies plate 30 runs in double header sweep of Saints Monday afternoon

The Butler Grizzlies swept a doubleheader against the Seward Saints at East Park on Monday, winning a thrilling 5-4 contest in game one before taking care of business in game two, dominating Seward in a 25-5 victory.

Game One

Reese Briggs was the difference in a close encounter in the first game of the day, as her three run home run in the first inning was enough to steer the Grizzlies past a Seward team that gave the Grizzlies plenty of trouble.

Emma Koeneke got the win, her 16th of the season, she pitched three innings and gave up four runs on five hits. Kendal LeGrand was dominant in relief, she pitched four innings, giving up no runs and just one hit, earning her first save of the season to preserve the one run victory.

Game Two

Game one was intense, but game two was anything but. The Grizzlies scored 14 runs in the first inning sending 18 hitters to the plate, and the rest was academic. Alex Olson hit two home runs in the first inning, the first being a two run shot to left field before a spectacular grand slam to center field. Olson finished with three hits and eight RBIs in the game to star in the victory. Butler's 25 runs is the most they've scored all season and their 14 first inning runs is the most they've scored in an inning all year.

Allyson Montgomery pitched the first two innings, but it was Emma Koeneke who was credited with the win as she came in relief in the third. Kendal LeGrand appeared in relief for the second time in the day as she retired the side in the fifth. The two relievers combined for seven strikeouts and only one run.

The Grizzlies earned their 30th win of the season with the sweep, improving to 30-2 and 18-2 in conference play. They'll return home on Thursday with a doubleheader at East Park against Northwest Tech starting at 1:00pm
