Women put up most points in Helmer era in lopsided opener

The Butler women more than doubled up Southwestern JV in the season opener at the Power Plant, winning 106-47.

Butler broke the century mark in points for the first time since a 101-89 win over Neosho County in November of 2009. It is the highest point total scored in Mike Helmer's six years as head coach and just five points shy of the school record of 111 points scored in 1987.

Butler wasted no time in jumping ahead, taking a 24-8 lead just four minutes into the game. Butler led 44-15 at the end of the first half.

The Grizzlies hit the century mark when a basket by Aliyah Rutledge made the score 101-43 with just over two minutes to play.

Butler was led in scoring by Jamillah Bonner. The returning first-team All-Jayhawk West Conference player picked up where she left off at the end of last season, pumping in a game-high 25 points.

Bethany Howard scored 16 points, Katie Anderson scored 14, Tysia Manuel had 12 and Shayla Williams added 10 points for Butler. All but one of the 11 players in uniform for the Grizzlies put their name in the scorebook in the opener.

As a team, Butler shot 54 percent from the field including 48 percent from 3-point range (12-25). Southwestern managed just 32 percent from the floor (16-32).

Butler is now 1-0 on the season. The Grizzlies will face a more rigid test on Saturday with a home game against Cowley County. The Tigers are the preseason pick to win the Jayhawk East.
