Butler dominates second half of big road win at Cloud

CONCORDIA, Kan. – The Butler women dominated the final 15 minutes of their game at Cloud County on Wednesday afternoon, beating the Thunderbirds 70-43 in Arley A. Bryant Gymnasium.

The win assures the Grizzlies a first-round home game in the upcoming Region VI playoffs. Butler is now 22-6 on the season, 10-4 in Jayhawk West Conference play. The Grizzlies are a half-game behind Seward County for third place in the conference standings. Butler will host Seward on Saturday at the Power Plant in El Dorado.

Butler led at Cloud throughout the first half, but usually by just a point or two. The Grizzlies did score the final four points of the first half and led 24-20 at the break in what had been a sluggish start to the game by both teams. The game, which was originally slated to start at 6 p.m., was moved up five hours to try to beat an incoming winter storm.

Cloud scored the first three points of the second half and would eventually take a 26-25 lead early in the second half. The game was tied 34-34 with 12 minutes to play when Samantha Satterlee hit the first of three 3-point baskets that would give Butler its first sizeable margin of the contest.

Satterlee's shots would trigger a 21-4 Butler run, turning a close contest into a Butler blowout. Butler had 34 points in the first 28 minutes of the game and scored 36 more points in the final 12 minutes.

Satterlee led Butler with 14 points, while Katie Andersen scored 13, Ashlee Ivy had 11 and Carly Bettencourt had 10 points. Jamillah Bonner had seven points in the game, giving her 1,002 points in her Butler career. She is only the second Butler women's player to hit that mark, joining Lakeisha Levi.
