Butler women beat Independence, advance to Region VI semis

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. -- The Butler women advanced to the Region VI semifinals with a 78-62 road win at Independence on Tuesday.

It is the first time the Grizzlies have reached the Region VI Final Four under head coach Mike Helmer and the first since the 2006-07 season.

Butler (26-6 overall) will face top-seeded Hutchinson (31-1) Friday at Park City's Hartman Arena. Tipoff is at 1:30 p.m. The Dragons, who defeated Seward County 67-52 in Tuesday's quarterfinal action, are currently ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA Women's Division I poll.

The Grizzlies had four players finish in double figures, with Jamillah Bonner scoring a game-high 19 points. With those points, Bonner became the Grizzlies' career leading scorer with 1,073 points, as she surpassed Lakeshia Levi (1,071 points). Bonner went 8-of-17 from the field and added seven rebounds and six steals. Samantha Satterlee had 17 points, while Ashlee Ivy and Tysia Manual added 10 each in the win.

Butler opened up the game with a quick 10-point lead, 19-9, just before the midway point of the first half. The Grizzlies led by as many as 17 in the opening half and held a 37-22 advantage at the break.

With just over four minutes into the second half, Carly Bettencourt hit a 3-pointer to give Butler its biggest lead, 51-27. However, Independence quickly cut the lead to eight, 53-45, in a four-minute span by hitting six three-pointers.

The Pirates got within eight points, 64-56, with 5:10 remaining, but Butler would limit Independence to just six points down the stretch and pulled away for the win.
