Butler women fall 60-59 to Hutch in Region VI semis

PARK CITY, Kan. -- The Butler women saw the 2012-13 season come to a close with a heartbreaking 60-59 loss to top-seeded Hutchinson in the Region VI semifinals at Hartman Arena on Friday.

Butler ends the season at 26-7, while Hutchinson (32-1) advances to Saturday's Region VI championship game against the Garden City-Cowley semifinal winner.

The Grizzlies played a strong first half, holding Hutchinson to just 27 percent (9-of-33) from the field. Butler's defense limited the Blue Dragons to just four points over a 10-minute stretch in the opening half, which the Grizzlies used to build its largest lead of the game.

Trailing 8-4 early in the first half, Butler would get consecutive baskets by Ashlee Ivy to tie the game. Jamillah Bonner's field goal inside the paint with 13:42 would give Butler its first lead of the game at 11-10.

Later in the half, Tysia Manual and Ivy would hit back-to-back field goals, then Carly Bettencourt's layup off a Samantha Satterlee steal gave Butler a 20-14 lead with 5:50 remaining in the half.

Hutchinson finally got going with a 10-2 run to take a 24-22 lead, but Shayla Williams hit a three-pointer from the left wing to give Butler a 25-24 lead at halftime.

The second half featured four ties and three lead changes. With 10:49 to play, the Grizzlies had its biggest lead of the second half, 42-37, after Bonner and Bettencourt each hit two foul shots. After Hutch hit a three-pointer to pull within two, Bonner hit the floor with an apparent injury and would not return to the game.

Following Bonner's injury, Butler and Hutch would exchanged baskets and Williams' field goal with 5:14 left to play would give the Grizzlies a 49-47 lead. Hutchinson answered with a 9-1 run over the next 3:33 and take a 58-50 lead.

Butler quickly answered with a three-pointer from Ivy, then Bettencourt hit a field goal with a foot on the line at the right wing to pull the Grizzlies within three, 58-56, with 55.2 seconds left. After a Grizzly timeout, Williams managed to get a steal and a layup to cut the deficit to 58-57.

With Butler trailing 60-57 with 13.5 seconds left, Hutchinson elected to foul Bettencourt, who hit two foul shots to pull the Grizzlies again with one. Butler would then foul with nine seconds left. Hutch missed both foul shots, Butler raced to get the ball up the court to Williams, but she was unable to get a shot on the rim as time expired.

Satterlee finished with 13 points to lead the Grizzlies, while Williams and Bettencourt had 12 points each. Ivy had nine points and seven rebounds and Bonner had eight points and six rebounds before leaving the game with the injury.

Butler shot 45 percent (21-of-47) from the field, while Hutch made just 35 percent (20-of-57).
