Helmer earns KBCA Coach of the Year honors

Butler women's basketball coach Mike Helmer has been named the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Women's Junior College Coach of the Year.

Helmer was selected for the honor following a season in which the Grizzlies went 34-3 and reached the national quarterfinals for the first time ever.

Butler won the Jayhawk East Conference with a perfect 12-0 record, the first conference title for the Butler women since the 1994-95 season. The Grizzlies were Region VI runners up and received an at-large bid to the NJCAA Division I tournament in Salina. The Grizzlies then defeated Southwest Mississippi and Shelton State (Ala.) to advance as one of the final eight teams in the nation.

The KBCA will honor its coaches of the year in all categories at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 at the Sams Chapel at Kansas Wesleyan University.
