Butler women hold off Dodge City for 68-66 road win

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Dodge City missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, allowing the Butler women to escape with a 68-66 conference victory on Wednesday evening at the Civic Center.

The Grizzlies led by 14 points with 12 minutes to go before Dodge City went on a 19-5 run to tie the game 55-55 with 5:55 to play.

Ashley Gibson scored to give Butler a 57-55 lead, but seconds later fouled out of the game. Kynadi Johnson then scored to put Butler up 59-57, but she also fouled out.

With the two leading scorers on the bench, Butler went on a 6-0 run to take a 66-59 lead with 2:07 to play, with Amari Dennis scoring four points. Dennis would also hit a pair of free throws to put Butler up 67-62 with 1:17 to go.

Butler would score just one more point in the game, while Dodge City crept closer. The Conquistadors scored with nine second left to get within two points and a Butler turnover with 4.8 seconds left gave Dodge City a chance at the final shot.

Butler had trailed 13-12 in the first half before going on a 16-2 run midway through the first half to take a 28-15 lead after Sarah Parker nailed a 3-pointer with 5:50 left in the period. Dodge City would get as close as five points but the Grizzlies scored the final five points of the half and led 39-28 at the break.

Butler led by eight before Ashley Gibson scored six straight points to make it a 50-36 game with 12:08 to play.

Gibson led Butler with 25 points, giving her 63 in her last three games. She has scored at least 20 points in 12 of Butler's 21 games this season including five of the eight conference games. Amari Dennis had a career-high 12 points for Butler, her first game in double figures in her Butler career. Sarah Parker had nine points for Butler. Jurnee Reid had six points and led Butler with seven rebounds.

The Grizzlies improve to 16-5 overall and are 6-2 in Jayhawk West Conference play and will play at Garden City on Saturday.
