Butler women hold off Barton in 53-48 road victory

GREAT BEND, Kan. - The Butler women earned the series sweep over Barton on Wednesday with a 53-48 road win at the Cougar Gymnasium.

Dakota Vann led all scorers with 13 points and had six rebounds in the win for Butler (14-5 overall, 11-5 conference). Kyeria Hannah added 12 points on 6 of 12 shooting to go with six rebounds, while Raven Prince finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

Butler recovered from a Barton 11-0 run midway through the second quarter, putting up a 9-0 run before the first half ended. Trailing 25-19 with under three minutes before the break,  Prince opened the run with a layup, then Vann followed with a three-pointer and a jumper. Prince added another basket before the buzzer to give the Grizzlies a 28-25 lead.

The Cougars managed to tie the game at 34-all midway through the third quarter, but Butler never relinquished the lead. Raegan Sanchez would hit a three-pointer as time expired in the quarter, putting the Grizzlies up 41-37.

Barton took its only lead of the second half at 43-41 with six minutes to play. Raven Prince followed back with making 1 of 2 foul shots and Kyeria Hannah added a basket just under a minute later to put Butler back on top. The Cougars closed back within one with 1:16 remaining, but Kendriana Washington answered with a field goal.

After a Barton turnover with eight seconds remaining, Washington hit two free throws to secure the victory.

Butler will return to action at the Power Plant on Saturday with a conference game against Cowley at 5:30 p.m.
