Butler women have win streak snapped by No. 13 Seward

The Butler women had their six-game winning streak snapped with a 74-53 loss to No. 13 Seward County on Saturday at the Power Plant.

Seward (17-2 overall, 13-2 conference) was deadly from three-point range, hitting 17 treys and making 45.9 percent from beyond the arc. Mollie Mounsey, who finished with a game-high 24 points and had 10 rebounds, and Lexi Hernandez each hit six three-pointers for the Saints, who won their 10th straight game.

Butler (12-6 overall, 9-6 conference) held an early 10-2 advantage in the first quarter as Seward was held to one field goal in the opening 5:45 of play.

However, the Saints would end the quarter on a 12-4 run to tie Butler at 14-all, then captured their first lead at 19-17 when Silvia Veloso hit a three-pointer with 8:11 before half.

Seward would go on to outscore the Grizzlies 27-10 in the quarter while building a 41-24 halftime lead.

Butler trailed by as many as 27 in the game, but managed to get the deficit to 16 midway through the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies began the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run, as Ericka Mattingly scored seven during the run.

For the game, Seward shot 46.3 percent (25-of-52) to Butler's 33.3 (18-of-54). The Grizzlies were hampered by poor perimeter shooting, as they made just 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from three-point range.

Mattingly led Butler with 15 points, while Awreona Ransom added 10 in the loss. Kyla Callins also had eight points and nine boards.

Butler will next host Barton on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
