The Butler Grizzlies continued their unbeaten start to the season as they earned a sensational conference win on Tuesday, leading wire to wire at the Power Plant as they earned a 76-46 victory over the Northwest Kansas Tech Mavericks.
The Grizzlies were led on the floor by Freddie Wallace who scored 19 points to lead all scorers. Wallace, who has an average of 18.7 points per game this season, has now scored in double digits in every game for the Grizzlies so far in her freshman campaign. Kaylee Nero and Syncere Harrod also scored in double digits, as the duo earned 12 points each. The Grizzlies were helped by 33 bench points, led by Harrod and Dayuna Colvin who had nine.
Butler shot 42% as a team despite a cold night from three point range, going just 2-13 from deep. The Grizzlies were helped by 24 points from the free throw line shooting 64% as a team. Butler also had 40 points in the paint.
The Grizzlies were their usual stingy selves defensively, holding their opponent to under 50 points for the fourth time this season. The Grizzlies held Northwest Tech to just 14% from three point range. Through seven games the Grizzlies have now held their opponents to just 23% from beyond the three point line this season. The Grizzlies also forced 42 turnovers which is the most Mike Helmer's squad has forced since forcing 47 turnovers against Friends University on November 10th last year. The Grizzlies forced 20 steals and finished with 34 points off turnovers, led by Maycee James who forced four takeaways. The Grizzlies won the rebounding battle, ending the game with 33 boards led by James and Kaylee Nero who each grabbed down six boards. Butler allowed just seven offensive rebounds and held the Mavs to just three second chance points as a team.
Butler improves to 7-0 on the year and 3-0 in conference play. The Grizzlies have now won their fourth game at the Power Plant this season. The Grizzlies will hope to keep their winning ways as they head on the road this weekend for a matchup with the Pratt Beavers on Saturday.
