Butler improves to 7-0 in KJCCC Play

#4 Butler takes down the Broncobusters in a KJCCC showdown Friday afternoon. The Grizzlies won the match 9-1 to improve to 7-0 in conference 11-1-1 overall.

Headed into the game, Butler had not conceded a goal in over 630 minutes of play. Their streak ended less than three minutes into the first half when Garden City exposed the Grizzly back line. From 30 yards out, Garden's Stephanie Brown Collected a ball and placed it over Mel Nuessen's (Emporia KS) head from about thirty yards out. Butler seemed shocked by the goal, but losing on their home turf was not an option. Abby Ponce (Oxnard CA) tied the scored for the Grizzlies with a quality finish right inside the penalty box. Her goal would begin an offensive wave. Ponce found another goal less than two minutes later off a corner kick from Stephanie Bonilla (Garland TX). With the score at 2-1, Perla Hernandez (Great Bend KS) took the offensive reins. Hernandez scored two back to back goals and assisted a third all within ten minutes. Her first goal game off a through ball pass from Casie Greenlee (Valley Center KS), her second was an unassisted finish on top of the eighteen. Hernandez then found Alyssa Miller (Thornton CO) on the back post to put the Grizzlies up 5-1. Megan Snyder (Overland Park KS) and Natausha Sanchez (Dodge City KS) were the next pair to go in the score book. Sndyer penetrated the Garden backline allowing Sanchez to go one vs. one with the Garden goal keeper. Sanchez was able to tuck the ball into the back of the net. Carla Daniels (Jamaica) was the last Grizzly to find the goal in the first half. Her shot came off a poor goalkeeper clearance and allowed Butler to go into the half leading 7-1 after a rocky start.

The second half would bring much less offensive excitement to the pitch. The Broncobusters came out hard and seemed unwilling to concede another goal. After much back and forth play, including a few quality save by both goalkeepers, Butler tallies their eighth goal. Hernandez who lead the nation in assists last year, found her way to the front of the goal again with thirteen minutes left in regulation. She slotted a ball across the face of the goal to Miller on the back post. The finish was the pair's second combination of the day. Miller would be on the end of the third and final goal as well earning her first colligate hat trick. Her finish came off a ball from Bonilla who ended her night with two assists. The final whistle blew seconds after Miller's goal with a final score of 9-1.

Despite the high score, the Butler defense was challenged several times throughout the match. Backed by Nuessen, the Grizzlies only conceded one goal and turned away 7 shots. The Garden goalkeepers combined for 10 saves on the night.
