Butler women knock off No. 5 Laramie County, 1-0

The Butler soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with a second straight win over another opponent ranked in the top five nationally.

On Friday, Butler beat No. 3-ranked Iowa Western, 1-0. Sunday afternoon, the Grizzlies came ready to face another formidable opponent. No. 5 ranked Laramie County had beat Iowa Western 4-0 less than 24 hours prior to kick off.

After another scoreless first half marked by opporunities for both teams, freshman Mari Ruvalcaba (Garden City, KS), laced a ball from the top of the 18 yard box. The play started when freshman Carla Daniels (Jamaica) took a ball down the flank and played a service into the box. Ruvalcaba was primed and ready to put the Grizzlies on top after missing a similar shot in the first half. Ruvalcaba's goal was the only goal in the 1-0 win for the Grizzlies.

Defensively, the Grizzlies recognized Laramie's offensive threats and shut them down. Stellar back line play from Mandi Roan (Dallas TX), Jee Yi (Amarillo TX), Abi Schnetzler (Kansas City, KS) and Kelsey Garrison (Wichita KS) was coupled with 6 clean saves from Aisling Dyer (Ireland). Butler not only improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, but they also improved to 180 scoreless minutes for the 2011 season.
