Butler brings home second conference win

Sunday night the #4 Grizzlies traveled to Coffeyville Community College to take on the Ravens in their second conference game of the season. Butler (5-1-1, 2-0) returned home with the win after shutting out Coffeyville in an 8-0 game.

The offensive explosion began just ten minutes into the game after a handball from the Ravens in the penalty box. Freshman Megan Snyder (Overland Park KS) stepped up to take the penalty kick for the Grizzlies and slipped the ball past the diving goal keeper. The game would remain 1-0 for the next 20 minutes as the Grizzlies continued to press on Coffeyville's defensive line. Despite the offensive pressure, the last three goals of the half came off of set pieces rather than in the flow of play. The second goal came off a free kick placed in the side netting by Sophomore Natausha Sanchez (Dodge City KS). The third and fourth goals of the half were scored off corner kicks from Stephanie Bonilla (Garland TX). Bonilla's corners were finished by Perla Hernandez (Great Bend KS) and Abby Ponce (Oxnard CA) respectively. The Grizzlies went in to half time up 4-0 having taken only 13 shots 5 of which were on goal.

The second half opened with more great service from Bonilla. Less than 5 minutes in she dropped another corner in the box this time finding teammate Aisling Dyer (Ireland). Bonilla would finish the game with a season high 3 assists. Ponce found another opportunity to put Butler on the board only minutes after Dyer's goal. Her second goal of the game came after Hernandez found Dyer through a seam in the Ravens defense. Dyer sent the ball back across the box to a running Ponce who placed the it in the back of the net. 20 minutes into the second Abi Schnetzler (Overland Park KS) got on the boardwith a high floater over the goalkeepers head. Butler's offense continued to challenge the Ravens backline and they were able to find the back of the goal one more time. Alyssa Miller (Thornton CO) took the score to 8-0 with a shot from just inside the 18 yard box. Dyer finished the game with 1 goal and 2 assists and Ponce ended her night with two goals.

Mel Nuessen (Emporia KS) recorded another shut out in the win making zero saves on the night. The Ravens goalkeeper had 7 saves.

The Grizzlies will host Neosho County Community College Sunday September 18th at 2:00.
