#4 Butler Soccer improves to 6-1-1, 3-0 in KJCCC, with a 6-0 win against Neosho Sunday afternoon.
The Grizzlies came into Sunday rested and ready to play after a week off from competition. Hungry for another conference win, Butler played with pride in front of a large home crowd. Stephanie Bonilla (Garland TX) put the Grizzlies ahead early scoring her first goal of the season off a pass from Aisling Dyer (Ireland). Bonilla's goal was followed by a finish from Perla Hernandez (Great Bend KS). The scoring play started when Alyssa Miller (Thornton CO) penetrated into the penalty box going one vs. one with the Neosho goalkeeper. When Miller and the keeper got tangled at the top of the box, Hernandez found the ball and slipped it away into the empty net. Butler continued to breakdown Neosho's defense, but the score would remain 2-0 at half.
The second half saw a flood of goals from the Grizzlies. Carla Daniels (Jamaica) put the first second half points on the board when she got her head on a cross from Abi Schnetzler (Overland Park KS). Just ten minutes later Aisling Kerr (Ireland) found the back of the net for her first time this season. Her shot came off a poor clearance by Neosho that she was able to drop in over the goalkeepers head. Another Irish national lit the score board five minutes later. Outside back, Mandi Roan (Dallas TX), played a ball ahead to Miller who found Dyer streaking in on the far post. Dyer laced the ball home putting the Grizzlies up 5-0. The final goal of the game came off a cross from Abby Ponce (Oxnard, CA) who found Miller in the box. Miller's goal made her the games point leader with one goal and two assists.
Despite the 6-0 win, the Butler defense played a hard game. Neosho's high pressure offense forced the Grizzlies defense to play quickly out of the back. The team met the challenge well allowing only 4 shots and posting another conference shut out. Mel Neuseen (Emporia KS) played 90 minutes in goal brining her season total to nearly 500 minutes with only 2 goals against.
Butler will look to continue their winning streak this Friday as they take on conference rival #16 Johnson County in a rematch of last year's semifinal match up. Johnson, who is also undefeated in conference this season, will travel to Butler. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM.
