Butler soccer team volunteers to help break a world record for feeding the hungry

The Butler soccer team was recently a part of a record-setting event to fight hunger as part of its commitment to the community.

Numana, a locally-based organization that aims to feed those in need both nationally and internationally, set out to set a world record for most meals packaged in an hour. The rice and bean meals meals were packaged and shipped to hungry children in Haiti.

With hundreds of volunteers pouring into help on a Saturday afternoon, the record was broken with staff from the Guinness Book of World Records on hand to document the effort. Nearly 480,000 meals were packaged in less than an hour. The old record was 350,000 meals.

Butler soccer staff and players actually were part of the team behind the scenes. The Grizzlies worked with approximately 20 other volunteers on Friday, the day before the packaging event, to help set up.

"We bagged vitamins, made boxes and sorted equipment to ensure the attempt at the record could go off without a hitch," said assistant coach Suzie Hinman. "We were there with Numana employees and several members of the board of directors helped the players understand what kind of impact the event would make.  Because we were the only program to attend, the entire group was very grateful for our help."

Butler soccer stresses the importance of student-athlete success on the pitch and inside the classroom while also giving back to the local communities.
