Butler shuts out Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa in home win

The Butler soccer team picked up its first shutout of the season with a 6-0 victory over Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa on Friday afternoon.

Butler (2-1 overall) was led by four freshman - Kennedy Johnson, MariCarmen Rios Jean, Brittney Lawrence and Kelly Sutton - all who each had a goal and an assist in the win.

Grizzly sophomore Morgan Foster netted the game's first goal just nine minutes into the game, as she scored from about eight yards out.

With less than five minutes left in the first half, Rios Jean scored on an assist by Johnson to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Butler quickly came out in the second half with a goal just two minutes in the half as Brittney Lawrence scored her second goal of the season, hitting a left-footed shot into the far side of the goal.

The Grizzlies then scored twice within a two-minute span, beginning with a goal by freshman Vanessa Campos in the 76th minute. Alyssia Salinas drilled a shot on goal from about 30 yards out, which was deflected by Maverick goalkeeper Madellene Pieper. Campos was able to race in to kick the loose ball into the net. Johnson then followed with a header in the box in the 78th minute to give the Grizzlies a 5-0 lead.

The final goal came courtesy of an own goal by the Mavericks, as a Tonkawa defender accidently headed a ball into the net in the 82nd minute. Sutton was credited with the goal for Butler.

Butler will continue its six-game homestand with a conference contest against Kansas City Kansas (0-2) at 4 p.m. Sunday.
