Butler races past KCKCC 11-0 in conference opener

Butler soccer opened the defense of its Jayhawk Conference championship in convincing fashion on Sunday at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex, easily handling Kansas City, Kansas Community College by an 11-0 score.

The Grizzlies got off to a quick start in their first conference match as Korrie Raney scored a goal just 25 seconds after the opening whistle. It is one of the quickest goals in a game in Butler history.

Butler would continue to add goals in the first half. The next one came on a shot by Alyssia Salinas in the seventh minute. Morgan Foster would score a goal in the 16th minute on an assist by Maddie Decker. On the reset following the goal, Brittney Lawrence immediately stole the ball and raced past the entire KCKCC defense, sending a left-footed shot with pace into the side netting to make the score 4-0.

Butler's last goal of the first half came on a high-arcing shot from the right side of the field that floated over the keeper's outstretched hands and into the back of the net as the Grizzlies led 5-0 at the half.

Brittney Lawrence would score two more goals in the second half for her first collegiate hat trick.  Maddie Decker would score twice with assists from Madison Wedekind and Morgan Foster.

Butler also got single goals from Tiffany Mercado and Kennedy Johnson to round out the scoring. The final goal from Johnson came on a header off a well-placed cross ball played from Kelly Sutton.

Meanwhile defensively, Butler keeper Kelsi Langley posted a second straight shutout. She has played 197 consecutive minutes without a goal being scored against her dating back to the match against Laramie County (Wyo.)

Butler improves to 3-1 on the season, 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference action. The two-time defending conference champions will play two non-conference games this weekend against tough competition. The Grizzlies host Otero (Colo.) at 2 p.m. on Friday and will play Iowa Central at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Both games will be played at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.
