Wedekind powers Butler in 4-0 home win over Neosho

Madison Wedekind had a goal and two assists to lead the Butler women to a 4-0 win over Neosho County in a Jayhawk Conference match on Sunday evening at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

Wedekind had her first assist just two minutes into the game when she slotted a ball across the face of the goal that was finished by Vanessa Campos.

Five minutes later, Wedekind had the ball near the end line and placed it high in the air in front of the goal. Morgan Foster was able to run under the ball and finish it for Butler's second goal.

The Grizzlies would get an unassisted goal by Brittney Lawrence in the 39th minute as she got the ball on a free kick following a Neosho foul. She cut inside one defender and went around another before firing a shot that went off the glove of the keeper and into the net.

Butler led 3-0 at the half against Neosho. The Grizzlies would get one last goal, this coming from Wedekind in the 60th minute on a corner kick that was taken by Kelly Sutton and deflected toward Wedekind by Darci Nighingale. The ball hit the right upright and ricocheted into the back of the net.

Butler keeper Kelsi Langley earned her sixth shutout of the season with the win, her first since an 11-0 win at Pratt on Sept. 18.

The Grizzlies are now 11-2 on the season and remain the only undefeated team in conference play at 6-0. Butler will play two games that will weigh heavily in the conference championship race this weekend, with a game at Hutchinson on Friday at 4 p.m. and a game at Coffeyville on Sunday at 5 p.m.
