No. 6 Butler shuts out Hutch 3-0 in key conference battle

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Butler women's soccer team picked up a key 3-0 road victory over rival Hutchinson to stay undefeated in conference play on Friday.

No. 6 Butler (12-2 overall, 7-0 conference) took a 2-0 first-half lead over the Blue Dragons (7-4, 6-4), despite shooting into a mild crosswind.

Just nine minutes into the contest, the Grizzlies took advantage of a defensive breakdown by Hutchinson as goalkeeper Bailey Stupe could not control a crossing pass by Madison Wedekind. After a few bounces in the box, freshman Brittney Lawrence tapped it in near the right post for Butler's first goal. The score was Lawrence's team-leading 21st goal of the season.

In the 22nd minute, Morgan Foster blasted a shot from outside the left corner to give Butler a 2-0 lead. The goal was Foster's 18th on the year.

Maddie Decker added an insurance goal in the 80th minute for Butler on an unintended pass from Madison Wedekind. The pass from the right side in the box rolled past two Butler players and found Decker on the other side for the goal.

Butler will next travel to Coffeyville (11-1-1 overall, 7-1-1 conference) for a 5 p.m. contest on Sunday.
