Butler battles second-ranked Navarro in a 2-2 tie

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Against two of the top four teams in the country this past weekend, the Butler women's soccer team failed to come out with its first victory of the season.

The Grizzlies fell 4-1 to fourth-ranked Laramie County on Friday, then rallied for a 2-2 tie against #2 Navarro, Texas on Saturday. Butler is 0-3-1 on the season, playing ranked teams in all four contests.

Against Laramie, the Golden Eagles scored two first-half goals within a minute of each other, both on assists from Megan Campbell. In the second half, Laramie added a third insurance goal in the 50th minute before the Grizzlies finally got on the scoreboard. Freshman Rosa Urista-Chico netted her second goal of the season in the 77th minute to make the score 3-1. Laramie then finished the scoring when Campbell scored in the 85th minute.

Laramie outshot Butler 18-9 in the contest. Goalkeeper Kelsi Langley made four saves in the loss.

On Saturday against Navarro, Butler fell behind early in the eighth minute on a Shanise Foster goal. The Grizzlies rallied with the equalizer in the 49th minute of second half, when sophomore Madison Wedekind scored on an assist from Urista-Chico.

Navarro took a 2-1 lead midway through the half when Trudi Carter scored a goal, but Butler answered back in the final minute of regulation when Urista-Chico scored. Brittney Lawrence and Madison Zimmer both assisted on the tying goal. Both teams failed to score in 20 minutes of overtime, ending the contest in a 2-2 tie.

Butler managed the tie, despite being outshot by Navarro 25-8. Sophomore keeper Paige LaBadie made six saves in the contest.

Butler will host 11th-ranked St. Louis, Mo., in the 2014 home opener on Friday. Kickoff at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex is at noon.
