No. 10 Butler routs Neosho County 18-0 to open conference

Behind a pair of hat tricks from sophomores Jaclyn Means and Rosa Urista-Chico, No. 10 Butler cruised to an 18-0 home win over Neosho County to open conference play Sunday at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

The 18 goals scored by the Grizzlies (5-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 conference) is the third-highest total scored in a game in the program's history.

Playing only a 70-minute match due to a limited roster for Neosho, Butler wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Urista-Chico netted the first goal in the opening minute. Just over seven minutes later, Means scored her first goal from the right side, which started a scoring frenzy over the next 13 minutes.

In the ninth minute, sophomore Amy Strath had a penalty kick blocked, but the deflection came right back to her, allowing an easy goal to go up 3-0. Two minutes later, Paige Achey followed with a left-footed blast into the right side of the net. Means then added back-to-back goals in the 13th and 15th minute, giving her a hat trick in a seven-minute span.

Achey and Jessica Quezada followed with goals, which put Butler up 8-0 just 21 minutes into the contest. Dalia Fernandez ended the shortened first half with two goals to give the Grizzlies a 10-0 lead at half.

With a running clock in the second half, Butler kept the offensive pressure on the Panthers. Lauren Allan scored her first goal of the season to open the half, then Lexi Clark, Laurie Theis, Quezada and Emma Samenus all scored in a six-minute span. Urista-Chico added her second goal on a penalty kick in the 56th minute, then Emily Woods took advantage of an poor clearout of the ball by Neosho for another goal. Urista-Chico then finished the scoring with her third goal, blasting a shot in the top half of the goal.

Neosho failed to manage a shot in the contest, which allowed freshman goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger to record her fifth shutout of the season. Butler had 58 shots, with 33 on goal.

Urista-Chico finished with three goals and two assists, while Means had three goals and one assist. Quezada scored two goals and two assists, while Achey and Fernandez each had two goals in the win.

Butler will continue conference play with a home contest Friday against Dodge City. Kickoff from BG Products Veterans Sports Complex is at 7:00 p.m.
